Outlook 2018: Top-paid Jobs and Skills in South Africa

A recent job and skills survey across South Africa revealed the top highest paid jobs and sectors based on salary reviews compiled in the last quarter of 2017, and what to expect in 2018.

The most sought-after and top-paying industries remain the IT, financial, and engineering sectors. Mid-level and senior positions are high in demand for IT management, financial management, financial analysis, chartered accounting, plant management, technical business architecture and civil engineering.

Careers in environmental engineering and health, safety and environment (HSE) are becoming increasingly popular, entering the top 10 highest paid jobs in the survey.

Popular intermediate and senior positions report salaries ranging from R30k to R80k. The salary ranges represent a monthly cost to company (CTC) remuneration and serve as an indication of the average salary offerings for each occupation.

The salary ranges are based on actual salary packages posted with vacancies advertised between April and November 2017 on the CarrerJunction job portal. The relevant data was collected from a 20000+ monthly job pool for the measurable period.

The most in-demand skills reported by employers in 2017 include software development (ICT), middle/department management, sales consulting, financial and project accounting, and systems/network administration (ICT).

Scarce skills likely to be in high demand in 2018, based on the industry trends and the employers’ projected staffing requirements, are software development, business analysis, financial/project accounting, and cost and management accounting.
