The ultimate guide to resigning: Part 1

Got a new and exciting job but not sure how to break the news to your current company? Don’t worry because we are here to help with this guide on how to write a resignation letter.

Resigning can be quite a scary thing to do. You want to make sure that you leave your current company on the best possible terms. This is important as it can help with getting a good reference further down the line. But it can also help with your professional reputation.

It is important to remember that resigning is never an easy task, even if you hate your job. It can often be nerve-wracking. But it is vital to ensure that your resignation is done tactfully.

Here are a few things to do before you hand in your resignation:

  • Make sure you are prepared to leave
  • Don’t give the impression that you are moving on before you hand your resignation in. For example, don’t start removing photos from your desk or taking things home until you have officially resigned.
  • Save any files you will want after you leave to a hard drive, Dropbox or Google drive or email copies to yourself.

One of the final things you need to do before you hand in your resignation is to find out what notice period you are expected to give. The normal notice period is usually one calendar month but make sure you double-check as if you give an insufficient notice period the employer has the right reject the resignation and require the employee to work the full notice period. Once you have found out your notice period, you are ready to start compiling your resignation letter.

Once you are 100% sure of your notice period, you are ready to start writing your resignation letter.
