Several organisations are dependent on the latest salary survey data to benchmark their internal salaries against market-related ones. Salary benchmarking is vital for external correspondence as companies compare their salaries against their competitors or peers to attract and retain exceptional talent.

In South Africa, a select few companies are known for having survey data. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the workplace has ushered in new challenges – the financial pressures placed on businesses have indicated temporary pay cuts. An independent survey conducted by the South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) – the Employer Benchmarking Survey 2020, factors the considerable change in the graduate job market as employers re-evaluate their recruitment needs. It provides a benchmark from which to compare with others in the industry.

Key takeaways from the survey include:

• The Accounting and Professional Services firms were the largest recruiters, with more than two-fifths of all vacancies in 2020.
• R220 000 was the median graduate starting salary for 2020.
• The highest starting salaries in 2020 were for the positions of actuaries, quantitative analysts, investment analysts, lawyers and engineers with offered median starting salaries of at least R350 000.

More recently, the Career Junction Index, August 2021, revealed that the demand for labour increased during August of this year, indicating slightly less competition in the jobseekers’ market. Below are the positions that have become more popular – experiencing a recent spike in demand, with the average salary offerings for an intermediate level:

Western Cape (WC): R17 624 – R34 459 p.m. (CTC)

KwaZulu Natal (KZN): R22 463 – R34 407 p.m. (CTC)

• Business Development

GP: R41 731 – R54 793 p.m. (CTC)

WC: R28 298 – R41 955 p.m. (CTC)

KZN: R30 181 – R44 583 p.m. (CTC)

• Data Analysis/ Warehousing

GP: R45 109 – R58 308 p.m. (CTC)

WC: R41 360 – R59 925 p.m. (CTC)

According to the same Index, the following occupational fields with the most sought-after skills set currently are:

Software Development – Year-on-year (YOY) demand for software development skills increased by 18%.

Middle/ Department Management – Since January 2021, middle or department manager hiring increased by 10%.

Representative/ Sales Consulting – Despite a decline in recruitment for sales consultants and representatives, sales skills remain highly in demand, with YOY demand increasing by 15%.
