Preparing For Your Performance Review
Is your first or next performance review just around the corner? Like many other professionals, a performance review can leave you anxious about whether or not you will excel in them. A typical feeling but one that can be managed or lessened – you can view yearly performance reviews as an opportunity for improvement and reflection.
For managers, employee reviews allow them to better understand where your breakdowns might be and then uplift you. It is beneficial to know effective methods of succeeding in your yearly reviews and to prepare for them to alleviate the potential of a nerve-wracking experience.
But first, what is a performance review?
A performance review describes a formal assessment that a manager uses to evaluate an employee’s work performance, identify strengths and weaknesses, offer feedback and determine goals for future performance. Historically, several organisations conducted annual performance reviews for their entire workforce, but more recently, companies have shifted toward a frequent feedback performance management system where managers can conduct quarterly, monthly or weekly reviews. In some companies, performance reviews take the form of more casual manager check-ins and one-on-ones.
Performance reviews can help employees understand how they are successful, how they can improve, how their work aligns with broader company goals and the company expectations. Performance reviews effectively recognise high-performing employees, correct any organisational issues before they become overwhelming, communicate expectations, encourage growth and development and promote employee engagement.
How you can prepare for a performance preview
Regardless of a performance review’s formal or informal nature, you should be motivated to prepare for one. We have gathered a few suggestions that will result in a successful review for both parties:
Mindfulness
Being mindful of your behaviour and how you treat others throughout your year is crucial. Your performance is not reviewed solely on the outcome of your work – your effective communication in the workplace and how you work with employees are also considered.
Understanding company goals and expectations
Knowing and understanding employer expectations are beneficial. You can then note targets and work towards achieving them – quantify your accomplishments.
Self-evaluate
You should practice self-evaluation by identifying your strengths, weaknesses, accomplishments and goals. If you realise that you have failed to meet or reach some of your goals, highlight your successes. Discuss how you have improved and continue to improve – display a teachable attitude.
Performance reviews should be a top priority for managers and employees. They ensure that all parties’ personal goals are aligned and offer valuable insight on how both the manager and employee can improve. When performance reviews are placed foremost, the whole organisation will benefit.
