Work-from-Home Trends and Careers for South Africans
After last year’s changes in the world of work, brought by the pandemic, the work from home (WHF) trend became popular among South Africans involved in digital and knowledge-based careers.
This blog explores the most recent studies involving WHF trends and the local careers that allow more flexible work schedules.
Remote working preferences
Over half of South Africans (53%) showed their preference for a career that allowed them to work from home occasionally, and a high percentage (44%) were willing to embrace fully remote work, according to research conducted by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network.
The research, Decoding Global Ways of Working, surveyed over 200k participants in 190 countries, including South Africa. View the full report here.
Some operational roles are undoubtedly challenging to implement in a WFH pattern, requiring frequent contact with clients and handling physical goods. Still, a majority of SA respondents (61%) indicated their desire for more flexibility in defining their working hours and the chance to work from home at least occasionally.
WFH opportunities in digital marketing and ICT
Following the lockdown restrictions, digital marketing, some IT and communication roles switched almost exclusively to online collaboration, and some businesses maintained an occasional remote working policy.
Furthermore, according to the study, 62,5% of digital marketing professionals expressed their interest in moving completely from office jobs to a fully remote working model, even after the pandemic ended.
For those who realise they are better suited for flexible work and WFH roles, digital marketing, IT and communication careers provide a permanent remote way of working.
Digital marketing jobs ideal for working from home include social media management, paid advertising, SEO management, content marketing specialist or content development.
Skilled IT professionals are more likely to achieve more flexibility and work independently from home in web design, UX design, web development, app development or software development jobs.
These jobs require a particular set of skills, specialisation, and significant re-skilling and up-skilling for junior professionals. Candidates should strengthen their job applications with a strong portfolio, relevant skill certification courses, and a solid work ethic.
