Gauteng and Western Cape Top Regional Salary Averages

While Gauteng salaries are not significantly higher than the national average, the province remains the preferred professional location to work for earning potential, followed by the Western Cape. Digging deeper, some sectors reveal considerable average remuneration differences among provinces.

Recent research by jobs portal Career Junction showed that Gauteng salaries are up to 10% higher than in other provinces, with considerable average salary differences in the warehousing and logistics (21%), and admin and office support (13%).

Professionals earn well above average in most sectors in the Gauteng province, while in Western Cape average salaries fall within or slightly below the average, except the finance sector where salaries are far below average (up to 23%).

In Kwazulu-Natal, too, the average salaries are below the national average mark. In the marketing sector, for example, salaries are between 35% and 37% below average. Other sectors falling below the national average remuneration include IT, finance, admin, and office support sectors, where salaries are between 25% and 29% below average.

The highest salary increases reported at regional levels included accounting jobs, data capturers, customers support agents and call centre operators. Customer service personnel reported increases from 26% to 42%. In the accounting field, cost and management accountants, payroll and wages, and accounts payable and receivable consultants reported remuneration growth between 18% and 26%.

However, most average salary increases are reported for intermediate and senior-level positions. It is because companies are likely to pay higher above the national average to professionals with skills harder to find on the South African job markets.

Popular high-earning positions include financial and IT managers, business analysts, technical and business architects, chartered accounting, risk managers and financial analysts, civil/structural engineers, and environmental engineers.

Engineering, IT and finance continue to be the top best-paid sectors in South Africa.
