Congratulations, you got a new job! Now you just have to survive your first day – and whether it’s your first day of working ever, a new company or just a different department, the first day at any job can be stressful!  To ensure that you have a positive first-day experience, it’s good to do some preparation to ensure that everything runs smoothly, which brings us to these tips for success on your first day at a new job! These handy hints will guide you through your first day and set you on the track for success!

First impressions matter

From your smile to your shoes, people remember their first impressions! For the first day at a new position, you want to ensure that you impress from the word go! Make sure your outfit is appropriate, clean and neat. Be friendly with everyone you meet, remember names, and try to connect with everyone you can- even if it’s just a 30-second greeting in the hall.

Plan your commute

So simple, yet so important.  Arriving on time, particularly for your first day on the job, is vital. Before starting a new job, be sure to map out the best route to your new workplace. Have a look at the public transport options and schedules, or if you’re driving, the roads and potential commute issues. Try and plan so that you can arrive 10 minutes early- showing up early is okay, but arriving late immediately sets you back.

Prepare and ask questions

For most people, the first day will be largely devoted to listening, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to prepare some thoughtful questions. Asking questions demonstrates that you are interested in succeeding and have a desire to learn, all while helping you come to grips with a new environment and new responsibilities. Don’t overdo it though! Too many probing questions can seem invasive or amateur.

Accept that lunch or after-work drinks invitation

If your new boss or co-workers invite you out for lunch, or even after-work drinks, say yes! A social outing is an excellent opportunity to connect with your colleagues and boss, all in a more casual setting. You’ll learn more about them as people and possibly get a peek into how the workplace works. This is a great time to ask questions- about the office, colleague’s lives, clients and more!

Keep calm, trust in your own abilities and follow this useful guide- you’re on your way to an awesome first day!
