The Best Employers and Work Perks in South Africa
The Top Employers Institute regularly releases an updated list of the best certified top employers to work for. Curious to find out what South African companies were considered this year?
A global certifier of excellence in employee conditions, the Top Employers Institute selects and recommends prime working organisations based on employee conditions, work environment, employment practices and talent developed in the respective organisations.
The companies were evaluated across nine key areas, which included: talent strategy, workforce planning, onboarding, learning and development, performance management, leadership development, career and succession management, compensation and benefits, and work culture.
The study found that these top organisations tend to provide their employees with substantial work perks and programmes aimed at employee skills and talent development beyond the expected work benefits.
Furthermore, the research uncovered new HR and people development trends, where organisations are adopting a more empowering collaborative relationship between employers and employees.
There is a growing recognition among Africa’s top employers that people development is not a top-down strategy, according to Top Employers Institute’s findings. Employees are allowed to take over ownership of their careers and work development.
The top ten new companies included this year in the Top Employers in South Africa were:

- Tata Consultancy Services
- Microsoft
- Nestlé South Africa
- Accenture
- Orange Business Services – South Africa
- Vodacom Group
- Dimension Data
Some of the work perks and benefits offered to employees recruited by these organisations include access to online tools and learning platforms (Old Mutual); paid holidays, comprehensive life insurance (SAP South Africa); free devices, meal vouchers, incentive trips, and tickets to events sponsored by the company (Cell C); and free digital personal assistant system (Accenture).
